Different from, yet connected to, language development standards, the students in dual language immersion (DLI) programs should be assessed on their mastery of the language arts standards in both English and the target language. The language of the assessment should be connected to the language of instruction for language arts.

Determine at what grade levels language arts would be assessed in both languages:
- In English:
- In all states, there is a required annual reading/language arts assessment for all students across all grade levels.
- English Learners that have been in the United States for a year or less are typically exempt from this requirement.
- In all states, there is a required annual reading/language arts assessment for all students across all grade levels.
- In the target language:
- All students in DLI programs should be assessed in language arts in the target language as long as they are receiving instruction in language arts in the target language.
